Pets View on Koppers

They love us unconditionally and here they can speak to us all. Tell us your pets story about living in the Kopper Superfund area. Our 4 legged friends voices need to be heard as well. Send us their stories to koppersgainesville@gmail.com

Pet owner speaks out about her pets: Dogs who get skin rash whenever they are outside and lay on the dirt. Dog who died because her platelets were destroyed and her blood could no longer clot. Cats dying of various forms of cancer that are classed as “rare” or “uncommon”. Cats within a household suddenly showing degrees of “head tilt” all at the same time; one severe enough that he died, the others still have head tilt two years later. Never have I seen this before moving to this neighborhood near Koppers. – Karen

Missy, family dog – 1980 (NW 3rd Street)

Died mysteriously weeks after moving into the neighbor.

    Sundance – 1985

I lived on NW 3rd Street directly behind Kopper’s, and I recall one summer losing my cat to cancer. Many other neighborhood cats died that summer from cancer as well. We feared letting our cats out of the house.

Since the soil replacement began, my cat has been getting really sick. They have left the soil exposed for five weeks exactly today. The small pittance they gave us was nowhere near the amount of money needed to stay in a hotel for that long. We got $700 each. All of the surrounding yards have sod and mulch already, but they started working on the next neighborhood before doing our yard. The ‘landscaping’ they are doing is awful and the neighborhood looks like crap. The worst part of it all is that it is just a waste of time and money because it isn’t going to fix any problems. It has literally only created problems for my household.

So, that brings me to my question. Does anyone have tips for a person in my situation? In my experience, doctors and vets rarely look at the big picture in regards to health. They usually prescribe antibiotics or something. I know my cat is sick and I don’t want to pay a hefty fee for some wise guy to say “yep she’s sick alright”. What are your experiences with the types of treatments to look for? I want to have them run the correct tests without the trial and error process. Also, I would love to hear some ways to naturally detoxify her.

Your experience is sadly the norm rather than an anomaly since the “remediation” has started. Many neighbors have reported new health problems in their pets and other family members. One of the holistic veterinarians in the Gainesville area may be able to help you; many can be found on the internet.
The best thing you can do for your household is to go to a City Commission meeting and publicly speak out about what you and your family (including your pet) are going through. They won’t know what’s going on in the neighborhood if you don’t tell them. Gainesville Commission meetings are held every other Thursday (call 334-5015 for details). Alachua County Commission meetings are held every other Tuesday (call 374-3636 for details).
